Sailstar

History

Sailstar was founded 2010 with dinghy courses for kids and adults. The location was Skärgårdsstad and Stensnäs north of Åkersberga, north Stockholm. Since then the activity has expanded. We have written two education books and a third is on our way. Courses have been arranged at Ljusterö, at Lilla Essingen and many out at Gistholmen in Stockholm archipelago. Not impossible that we will be back there for a couple of weeks season 2019! 2015 we started our Croatia courses and 2016 the big yacht courses in Stockholm. 2018 we initiated our midsize boats courses, with the Diva 24SC tailormade for Sailstar. 2022 we changed our Diva 24SC to our new Aira 22 sailing boats, daysailors, with electric engines!
Until the last season of 2023 we had more then 4 000 participants at our courses.

Founder and leader of Sailstar is Tomas Sandström. Tomas have been sailing since end of the 1970's and has participated in several national, European and World championships in dinghy sailing, and still does. A fourth place in the Europeans and a tenth place at the worlds in the RS Aero dinghy. He is an instructor of all Sailstar sizes of boats and yachts within Sailstar. But there are a number of instructors, among them Mathias Tengstrand, Max Hoppe, Philip Furness, Maya Leinonen, Anton Holmberg, Johannes Richter Jonsen and many more! Several of Sailstars instructors has Yachtsmans certificate Class VIII.

Who participates in the sailing courses?

Sailstar's courses are open for everyone from 16 years (or younger with parents), the only requirement is being able to swim 200 meters in open water. At our courses we have had participants from 5 years to more than 75 years. The dinghy courses are somewhat physical demanding, we do sail in also breezier winds and we capsize our dinghies, voluntary or not in our courses. The courses in our keelboats, small aswell as large is less physical but it exists moment of exercixe in them too. The sailing courses on our bigger boats have of course focus on sailing but do also contain parts of navigation, giwe way rules, weather, manouvering and more.

Our boats

The dinghies we are using is Laser BUG, a singlehanded dinghy big enough for an adult (max weight 165 kg) and RS Zest, a doublehanded dinghy that is also possible to sail singely.(Max weight 225 kg)
The daysailors we use is Aira 22, a 6.50 m, 2.20 m sailing boat with electric engine.
Our big sailing yacht is a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 that we use in Croatia, new 2018 and we did also tailormade her for our purpose with large sails, a code 0 and Lithium batteries. She has 4 cabins with double beds, two heads and space for sleeping in the saloon. Displacement 8.5 ton. In Stockholm we sail a Beneteau 50 that is slightly older but always updated. Displacement 15.5 ton, length 15 m, width 4,5 m makes her to our biggest yacht.
